The Facts

Reporting to the Vice President, Retail Finance & Agrium Accounts Payable, the North American Retail Controller provides financial management and strategic financial leadership for the Agrium’s Retail Strategic Business Unit. This position will be a key member in Retail Finance organization.

This position will be located in Loveland, Colorado and will lead financial management in a complex, global company of significant scale. This position will have exposure to businesses with some or all of the following characteristics: capital intensive, cyclical, commodity-oriented, business-to-business, collaborating and executing strategic initiatives within in a global Finance network. The North American Retail Controller will have overall accountability for Agrium’s Retail Financial, Products Finance and Loss Prevention.

The ‘Gateway to the Rockies!’ Loveland is located just 46 miles north of Denver on the I-25 Corridor. The quiet town is home to just over 65,000 people and is nestled in a valley at the entrance to the Big Thompson Canyon. Loveland is surrounded by lakes, parks and other recreational areas, and is a popular spot for varying water sports including rafting, as well as plenty of hiking and biking trails. Key Tasks

  • Collaborate with leaders across Agrium’s Corporate and Strategic Business Units (SBUs) in matters related to accounting and financial reporting;
  • Function as a business partner and trusted advisor within a matrix environment with multiple stakeholders and partner with business leadership to determine the information needs that best serve the Company’s internal and external customers;
  • Participate in strategic organizational initiatives requiring a high degree of competence, creativity and confidentiality;
  • Provide strategic vision and leadership to technology initiatives related to general ledger, chart of accounts, consolidation and financial reporting;
  • Develop the skills of team members to ensure position backfill capability and succession candidates;
  • Prepare and steward department budget, performance metrics and goals;
  • Manage the impact of organization growth, increasing globalization and regulatory change related to accounting, consolidation and financial reporting;

  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate and present financial results and/or strategy to Senior Management and external Audit, Tax, and Advisory service partners.

  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proven ability working in a matrix environment to reduce typical business information silos in order to increase cooperation and communication and work more effectively across business regions and functions.
  • Strong mentoring, coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise.
  • Knowledge of agriculture, retail and chemical markets.
  • Knowledge and understanding of financial processes such as SOX.
  • Understanding of industry IFRS and its interrelationship with financial results.
  • Knowledge and understanding of managing multiple currencies.
  • Understanding of business processes and process improvement methodologies and transformation


The North American Retail Controller has demonstrated advanced technical competence in accountancy, possess visionary leadership skills, have a commitment to staff development and have significant experience in global ERP information systems and process optimization. The individual possesses a minimum of 10 years of public company leadership experience with a focus on accounting, financial reporting and internal controls.

  • Collaborative and influential mindset combined with an absolute commitment to the achievement of deadlines is critical for success in this role.
  • Holder of the CPA designation in the United States.
  • Business or Accounting degree mandatory, a master’s in business administration is preferred.
  • 10+ years’ experience in a senior management role ideally with both external audit and in-house financial management experience gained in a high-growth organization.
  • 10+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience.
  • A combination of strong strategic orientation, excellent financial skills and merger/acquisition expertise with the ability to collaborate and influence across a diverse, global organization.
  • Experience as a Finance Lead of a multicurrency, global organization.
  • Experience as a Finance Lead of a major acquisition &/or disposition within a large global organization.
  • Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization.
  • Ability to balance the requirements of the Corporate office and the SBU.
