Reporting to the Manager, Technical Accounting, this position will prepare financial disclosures and related research supporting Agrium’s financial statements and Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MDA), specific financial reporting responsibitlies for the Wholesale Business Unit ("Wholesale"), and respond to technical and business accounting issues arising from complex transactions, working with:

    • Corporate and Wholesale management;
    • Corporate Reporting and Controller’s group;
    • Investor Relations;
    • Treasury;
    • Legal;
    • External Audit; and
    • Other stakeholders

Key Tasks:

  • Liaising with Corporate and Business Units, and external auditors, providing advice, consultation, and support on complex accounting issues, transactions and agreements.
  • Supporting mergers and acquisitions and capital markets access.
  • Interpretation and application of IFRS and internal accounting policies and procedures.
  • Determining acceptable accounting treatment and disclosure alternatives for complex and non-routine transactions.
  • Maintaining awareness of developing accounting standards and communicate relevant changes to stakeholders.
  • Documenting and supporting the implementation and application of recently released IFRS standards.
  • Documentation of policies and procedures.
  • Monitoring compliance with existing and proposed continuous disclosure rules and regulations.
  • Planning and execution of special projects to implement changes in accounting policies.
  • Teaching accounting principles and their application to the Agrium Finance community and to non-accountants.
  • Ad hoc assignments supporting Corporate Reporting and other stakeholders.

Wholesale Specific Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating completion of external financial statement note disclosures for Wholesale.
  • Leading review and compilation of supporting documentation for MDA and other periodic publications, presentations and securities filings.
  • Working closely with Wholesale stakeholders to understand the business and identify areas for improvements in accounting and disclosure practices.

TheIdeal Candidate

  • Comprehensive experience with IFRS.
  • High level of analytical, facilitation, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to take initiatives and work independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced team environment that must produce mission-critical results.
  • Ability to think broadly and approach situations with an eye toward continuous improvement.
  • Passion for complex accounting and financial reporting.

  • Ability to adapt business needs to accounting principles and convey the concepts to finance and non-finance audiences.


  • CA/CMA/CGA/CPA designation with a minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience.

  • 5 - 7 years of relevant and progressive accounting experience, preferably in large, industrial, multinational organizations.
  • Post-designation experience with financial reporting and/or accounting research in a public company environment preferred.
