Reporting to the Team Lead, Corporate Accounting, this position requires a high degree of cross-department and cross-business unit interaction. The Corporate Accounting department operates with a significant number of deadlines and reporting obligations. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of managing competing priorities. This is a temporary 1-year position.

Key Tasks:

  • Preparation of the monthly Balance Sheet analysis;
  • Preparation of the monthly CTA proof & analysis of unusual transactions;
  • Review of the monthly SG&A analysis, leveraging this knowledge to identify trends in our business;
  • Preparation of the quarterly accounting and reporting for our defined contribution pension, defined benefit pension and post-retirement benefits plans;
  • Assist in accounting and reporting of Agrium’s share based payment plans;
  • Provide financial analysis and disclosure information for the Corporate BU to the external reporting group supporting both quarterly and annual financial statement preparation;
  • Administer Agrium’s Balance Sheet Reconciliation tool;
  • Provide technical assistance to other professional members of the Corporate and SBU Controllers groups and in the application of complex accounting issues; including researching accounting and reporting issues as they arise and staying abreast of IASB and FASB developments; and,
  • Support on-going initiatives and projects as required.


  • Experience with full cycle accounting and month-end reporting.
  • Excellent analytical skills, problem solving and decision making capability.
  • Experience in preparation and review of account reconciliations.
  • The ability to work independently on large and small projects, with all levels of staff and leadership across the organization in a multi-task, deadline-oriented, team environment.
  • Pro-active approach to identifying issues &/or potential for improvement, and taking ownership to resolve.
  • Experience with a large ERP, SAP experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of pension plan accounting would be considered an asset.
  • Advanced Excel skills with experience in complex financial modeling and data analysis.


  • 5 – 10 years of work experience, more specifically financial accounting or corporate accounting experience, preferably in a public company.
  • A professional accounting designation (CPA) with minimum 3 years of post-qualification experience.
  • Sound understanding of IFRS and knowledge of U.S. GAAP.
